RRUCCULLA - SHo͝oSH

Score: 8.1

The newest release from the Spanish wonky producer Izaskun González is a hyper-kinetic, highly adventurous electronic journey that ressembles artists like Oneohtrix Point Never, Iglooghost or Sophie. Her unusual take on macro/post-pop culture and mixture of latin and anglo-saxon current trends is admirable, as well as her evident intelligence at crafting deconstructed pieces of cerebral, imaginative and relentlessly playful tracks. With SHo͝oSH, RRUCCULLA takes off and (luckily) she'll finally begin to be recognised as an unstoppable rocket in the experimental scene for Spanish-speaking countries (and for the whole world too).

Tracks I like the most: Intro coma 绿茶, Té De Cabello Blanco, Tea Gambler
Tracks I like the least: Menta Fútil

Artist: RRUCCULLA

Félicia Atkinson/Jefre Cantu-Ledesma - Limpid As The Solitudes

Score: 7.3

The collaborative release between French artist Félicia Atkinson and San Francisco-based auteur Jefre Cantu-Ledesma seems to propel their most alluring characteristics and mix them joyfully and effortlessly. The tracks here feel constantly menacing and tense, but the undeniable ambient, slippery atmosphere they express make the dichotomy the more palatable.

Tracks I like the most: And The Flower Have Time For Me, Her Eyelids Say
Tracks I like the least: Indefatigable Purple

Miya Folick - Premonitions

Score: 8.3

The debut album from American singer Miya Folick is a fantastic exploration through a one-of-a-kind mind, one that can be as soothing as agressive while always gripping. Tracks here float on BPM and mood and colour, but it's the continuous singer's versatility what makes them all shine and connect to tell a story about self-improvement, courage and empowerment. Premonitions is one of the most repeatable releases of the year, and surely marks the beginning of a promising career to bare in mind.

Tracks I like the most: Thingamajig, Leave The Party, Stop Talking
Tracks I like the least: Baby Girl

Artist: Miya Folick
Country: United States
Album: Premonitions
Released: 26/10/2018
Genres: Indie Rock, Indie Pop, Electronic, Art Pop, Synth-Pop
Length: 34:43

Isla De Caras - Chango

Score: 7.4

The debut full-length album by already-known indie band Isla De Caras seems like another good alternative to synth-pop, dreamy-tropical electronic on the Argentinian scene. The members of the band are suitably placed in their positions and they know how to mix between each other very well; the songs, on the other hand, cooperate and function coherently enough to transport you to other dimensions for their nearly 30 minutes. Chango satisfies for its interwoven textures and rattling emotions all throughout.

Tracks I like the most: Tiempo, Despacio, La Piedra
Tracks I like the least: Latas De Cerveza

Artist: Isla De Caras
Country: Argentina
Album: Chango
Released: 21/09/2018
Genres: Indie Pop, Synth-Pop, Electronic
Length: 27:02

Tasha - Alone At Last

Score: 7.6

The newest release from this up-and-coming singer called Tasha is a short, concise record about reflections on life and solitude. It's bolder and more magnetic than most of contemporary R&B out there lately, and despite some missteps here and there and a constant wish for more maximalist production, Alone At Last doesn't pretend to be anything it knows it isn't, and for that it feels sincere and authentic in its pristine shyness.

Tracks I like the most: New Place, Kind Of Love, Lullaby
Tracks I like the least: Alright

Artist: Tasha
Country: United States
Album: Alone At Last
Released:
Genres: Alternative R&B, Indie Pop, Dream Pop, Neo Soul, Electronic, Ambient

Mariah Carey - Caution

Score: 6.8

The latest full-length record by American pop diva Mariah Carey is indeed a hit-and-miss project: the artist seems to be unable to decide if she'll fully dive into psychic R&B or trashy macro-pop, and the results show off that doubtfulness, watching that some tracks have lots of potential and others simply exist. But besides that, Caution feels meditative and levitating, and marks up one of the most engaging LPs the singer has released in a while.

Tracks I like the most: GTFO, With You, Giving Me Life
Tracks I like the least: A No No, Stay Long Love You

Artist: Mariah Carey
Country: United States
Album: Caution
Released: 16/11/2018
Genres: Pop, R&B, Hip Hop, Electronic

LOUTA - ENCHASTRE

Score: 7.8

After his breakthrough mini-album in 2016, the Argentinian sensation Louta comes back maximising his sound and weird persona. The tracks on ENCHASTRE feel exactly that way: messy, chaotic in their own sub-worlds, but consistently entertaining. Though the slower songs don't favour the singer's limited vocal range, there are several good points and occassional standouts that make up for an experience that's like no other in the current indie national scene.

Tracks I like the most: TODOS CON EL CELU, UACHO, CUENTITOS, CHOCOLATE
Tracks I like the least: SOMOS TAN INTENSOS

Artist: LOUTA
Country: Argentina
Album: ENCHASTRE
Released: 13/10/2018
Genres: Indie Pop, Electronic, Bubblegum Bass, Pop Rap
Length: 35:21

Mon Laferte - Norma

Score: 8.0

The latest album from Chilean/Mexican artist Mon Laferte seems like a final discovery of identity. Paired down with The Mars Volta auteur Omar Rodríguez López, the singer melts her ambitious take on retro-Latinamerican sounds like salsa, cumbia, bolero or mambo with suffered vocals and lyrics, exploding little details and concocting a release that's enough coherent and engaging to serve as both ambient and dancefloor-ready music. Most of the tracks reveal themselves with each new listen, but it's its undeniable tenderness and flavour what makes Norma revealing and enthralling.

Tracks I like the most: Ronroneo, No Te Me Quites De Acá, El Mambo
Tracks I like the least: Si Alguna Vez

Artist: Mon Laferte
Country: Chile
Album: Norma
Released: 09/11/2018
Genres: Indie Pop, Salsa, Cumbia, Bolero, Mambo, World Music

Ian William Craig - Thresholder

Score: 8.0

The newest album from composer Ian William Craig is suffocating in its almost-cavernous tape sounds and harmonious with its choral chants. Few instances have seen the artist melting his findings and his production with such delicacy and grandeur, pulverising dichotomies and providing one of the most inducing and reverberating records of the year.

Tracks I like the most: TC-377 Poem, Idea For Contradiction 2, Some Absolute Means
Tracks I like the least: The Last Wesbrook Lament

Artist: Ian William Craig
Country: Canada
Album: Thresholder
Released: 02/11/2048
Genres: Ambient, Electronic, Experimental, Choral, Tape Music, Drone
Length: 37:10

Alex Anwandter - Latinoamericana

Score: 7.8

The latest release from the Chilean artist Alex Anwandter is perfectly captured in its album cover: there's a direct address at the listener, making him/her wake up at the injustices of the world, but there's also a direct, almost visceral vulnerability he's more than able to express throughout the songs where he tells that he's been afraid and ashamed and diminished, but ready to take the fight back and move one. Besides, the jungly, greeny background serves to symbolise the tropical approach to his 80's synth-pop and delluted R&B, elements that help build up the fluid and cohesive aesthetics of the record. Latinoamericana is indeed protest, consciousness and self-value, but also fun and joy.

Tracks I like the most: Locura, Odio A Todo El Mundo, Malinche, Latinoamericana, Canción Del Muro
Tracks I like the least: Um Girassol Da Cor De Seu Cabelo

Artist: Alex Anwandter
Country: Chile
Album: Latinoamericana
Released: 12/10/2018
Genres: Indie Pop, Synth-Pop, Alternative R&B
Length: 43:48

Rosalía - El Mal Querer

Score: 10

Rosalía slowly came to the extensive public eye since her last year's phenomenal debut record Los Ángeles, a work of immaculate beauty that took some traditional flamenco songs and gave them a somewhat modern twist. Since then, the 25-year-old girl has radically been called "the new voice of Spain" for her crispy, Middle-Eastern infused, relentlessly raw vocals, eerie production and glamourous persona. So, after such hype, her next move has been feeling like a constant enigma to us: what can she do to surpass her folky image? How will she be able to transcend space and time? The answer seems simpler: by releasing an album that's all the same mesmerising and even more fully realised. That's how her new album feels.

First of all, the instumentals. There's glitch here, as well as pop, electronic and folk chants, but the work essentialy and decisively breathes flamenco (claps, crasps, verses, laments, guitars, impeding void; it's all ever-present). And all of those seemingly disparate elements connect and cohere with razor-blade precision and personality.

Then, the vocals (of course). Rosalía has always sounded out of this planet, but here she devotes herself to the point of sacrecy; you can literally feel her vocal chords melting into your ears, and that's just when the angelic choruses and intermingles don't come up to play; there, perfection is palpable and engrossing.

El Mal Querer is just 30 minutes long: a length that's as criminally short as needily clever, where every single second seemed to have been meticulously calculated and asserted. You make the most of each of them, as if you know death's around the corner and you're determined to live the last minutes of your life to the fullest. But the record is also a monumental artistic achievement: every song has its distinct picture (that feel more like works of art by themselves) and tell a chapter into a moving concept story based on a 14th-century book, that the singer decided to reimagine in order to create her own vision of toxic love, existential crisis and female empowering. And for all its stubbornly theatrical interplay, magnificence is not the excepcion but the norm.

One can easily identify the auteur's influences and references, from the cracky percussion of M.I.A, the Vulnicura-era strings attached to Arca, the revelatory verses of Björk, the ullulating piano arpeggios of James Blake and Massive Attack, the touching vococoder of Bon Iver, the sound effects of PC Music and Charli XCX, the kung-fu musique concrète of Wu-Tang Clang, the otherworldliness of FKA Twigs, the R&B-tinged ballads of Frank Ocean, the chirpy videogame-like microsounds of Zelda, and even melodies that recall Justin Timberlake and Annie Lennox. And despite all of that, Rosalía fully manages to sound completely her own, and that's precisely the point: there's no one, absolutely no human being on earth who can do music this personal and unique. Or at least not that the public eye has yet to meet.

Yes, Los Ángeles is a magnific work, one that's pleasant to go back to all the time, but El Mal Querer is a thousand times better, for its complex arrangements, its vocal deliveries, its solid story and its unwavering spirit and gut. Within this short but intese millennium, there's not a better Spanish-speaking album one can think of that's better than this, and there's not a single musical talent that feels as promising as she does.

This might still be the beginning of Rosalía's career, one that's surely to be colossal, but that doesn't take the fact that she's throwing absolutely everything to the table and, for all her courage and daring to experiment and allow herself to wholly be, the record shines and slaps from beginning to end; it functions and delves as the purest macro-reflection of someone's soul. It embarks. It pulsates. It lives. It's there, in front of you. And you should be thankful for that.

Tracks I like the most: Malamente, Que No Salga La Luna, Pienso En Tu Mirá, De Aquí No Sales, Bagdad, Di Mi Nombre, Maldición
Tracks I like the least: Nana (if I have to choose one)

Artist: Rosalía
Country: Spain
Album: El Mal Querer
Released: 02/11/2018
Genres: Flamenco, Pop, Experimental, Glitch Pop, Folk, Avant-Garde
Length: 30:19

Dead Can Dance - Dionysus

Score: 8.3

The ninth album from Australian-British duo Dead Can Dance is an enthralling recollection of tribal ambient soundscapes that are as energetic as restrained. Pinches of Balkan, Greek, Turkish, Iranian and Byzantine traditional folk music illustrate and mark up the pace in which the seven tracks unfold and wave into one another, driven by Brendan Perry's voracious and ever-evolving instrumentals and Lisa Gerrard's immaculate vocals. Dionysus feels extremely short, eventually, since one is left wanting more of that exquisitely intriguing world of ancient fantasies and cryptic dancing.

Tracks I like the most: Dance Of The Bacchantes, Sea Borne, Psychopomp
Tracks I like the least: The Forest

Artist: Dead Can Dance
Country: Australia/United Kingdom
Album: Dionysus
Released: 02/11/2018
Genres: Tribal Ambient, Neoclassical New Age, Neoclassical Dark Wave, Worldbeat, Iranian Folk Music, Turkish Folk Music, Greek Folk Music, Byzantine Chant, Balkan Folk Music

Julia Holter - Aviary

Score: 8.3

The latest release from American composer Julia Holter is her most maximalist and exhuberant approach at art pop story-telling. Tackling impressively levitative spaces in an hour and a half, the singer displays an enormous knack for tilting, almost nerve-wracking minimalist compositions while singing disparately cryptic lyrics that submerge us into medieval folklore and tradition. There's breath in Aviary, enough of it to just attack you with pulverising strength when it needs to as well as with chilling introspection when it wants to. If not the best work onto the artist's enviable career (perhaps it gets too long at times), it's the perfect proof to say this woman is a monumental force and an unbreakable, ever-morphing talent.

Tracks I like the most: I Shall Love 2, Les Jeux To You, Chaitius, Voce Simul
Tracks I like the least: In Gardens' Muteness

Artist: Julia Holter
Country: United States
Album: Aviary
Released: 26/10/2018
Genres: Art Pop, Progressive Pop, Ambient, Electronic, Experimental, Avant-Garde, Modern Classical
Length: 89:58

Vince Staples - FM!

Score: 7.8

The newest release from American rapper Vince Staples comes out as a surprise mini-album with 11 short tracks running for just 22 minutes. But shortness does not imply lacking in any way; what's more, the small amounts of space the artist allows himself to have seem the more propelling for his sharp lyricism and ground-breaking beats. Interludes, skits and repetitive songs also make up for a ride that's energetic and reflective all the same. Even at its "laziest", FM! demonstrates its creator can disarm and fabricate his artistry at his ease without losing momentum at any time.

Tracks I like the most: FUN!, Outside!, New earlsweatshirt - Interlude
Tracks I like the least: Run The Bands

Artist: Vince Staples
Country: United States
Album: FM!
Released: 02/11/2018
Genres: Hip Hop, Rap, Experimental, Electronic
Length: 22:20

Babasónicos - Discutible

Score: 7.7

Almost thirty years in, and this Argentinian band continues to evolve and morph in sound and lyricism; yet again, they bring us another collection of tracks that seems to mark the shift for another era into the group's discography. The songs on Discutible are effervescent and transgressive, inviting listeners to reflect upon life in society, in communion and in solitude. The lyrics are raw and almost cocky in their sincerity, and the instrumentals add up to a constant trembling ground packed up with electric vibes and disjointed danceability. After all, most of the record works coherently and heavily, making for the first time in a while where we can see Babasónicos in full control of their mastery, tilting substance and fun at the same time.

Tracks I like the most: Orfeo, La Pregunta, Ingrediente, Cretino
Tracks I like the least: Trans-Algo

Artist: Babasónicos
Country: Argentina
Album: Discutible
Released: 12/10/2018
Genres: Alternative Rock, Alternative Pop, Electronic, Neo-Psychedelia
Length: 39:17

Ricardo Dias Gomes - Aa

Score: 7.0

The second release from Brazilian artist Ricardo Dias Gomes is more complex than its predecessor, but not necessarily more entertaining. Packed up with just eight songs running for twenty minutes, they all reveal and rebel while forming atonal, almost disparate sonic constellations that are as chaotic as sleep-inducing. Ricardo is a slow menacing force to beckon with, and it's his doubtless idiosyncratic take on ambient music what makes you value both his art and his persona.

Tracks I like the most: Precipício, Tela Parada
Tracks I like the least: Partimos Daqui, Pt. 2

Artist: Ricardo Dias Gomes
Country: Brazil
Album: Aa
Released: 14/09/2018
Genres: Electronic, Experimental, Ambient, Drone, Noise, Rock
Length: 20:46

Twenty One Pilots - Trench

Score: 8.0

The fifth record from American duo Twenty One Pilots is an incredibly mature concept album that feels like a rollercoaster of emotions, going from hiperkinetic pop rap to cutting-edge protest songs, wiggly disco-soul bops and even touching piano-driven balads. Trench feels hungry at the edge of starvation for melody and swing, and it's a peerless coming-of-age stance for a group that seems to have finally found a strong voice to operate on on their artistry.

Tracks I like the most: Jumpsuit, Nico And The Niners, Levitate, Morph, Cut My Lip
Tracks I like the least: Bandito

Artist: Twenty One Pilots
Country: United States
Album: Trench
Released: 05/10/2018
Genres: Indie Pop, Pop Rap, Indietronica, Synth-Pop, Pop Rock
Length: 56:09

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu - Japamyu

Score: 7.4

The fourth album from Japanese sensation Kyary Pamyu Pamyu is another hyperkinetic, uplifting approach to pop music that cements the artist's reputation as the ambassadress of the kawaisa and decora cultures. The tracks are filled with bubbly, sugary production that moves in a lot of directions, propelling the singer's child-like vocals and tender lyrics. Japamyu might not be the best album released on Earth, but it's at least a thrilling experience and another example of just how interesting things can also be in other parts of the planet.

Tracks I like the most: 2- キズナミ, 4- 音ノ国, 7- 演歌ナトリウム
Tracks I like the least: 6- ちゃみ ちゃみ ちゃーみん

Artist: きゃりーぱみゅぱみゅ (Kyary Pamyu Pamyu)
Country: Japan
Album: じゃぱみゅ (Japamyu)
Released: 26/09/2018
Genres: Bubblegum Pop, J-Pop, Electropop, Dance Pop, Picopop, Dance-Pop
Length: 35:56

Sheck Wes - Mudboy

Score: 6.8

The debut full-length album from Harlem rapper Sheck Wes manages to be both formulaic and odd. The tracks flow cohesively and restlessly, though the motifs and words expressed grow tiresome after the first half. There's evident potential in the artist, but the focus that's usually lost here and there makes Mudboy an experience that trembles for its decisively atonal charm as well as for its somewhat unstable weaknesses.

Tracks I like the most: Live Sheck Wes, Never Lost, Fuck Everybody
Tracks I like the least: Chippi Chippi, WESPN

Artist: Sheck Wes
Country: United States
Album: Mudboy
Released: 05/10/2018
Genres: Hip Hop, Rap, Trap
Length: 49:10

Robyn - Honey

Score: 8.5

The first album in eight years from Swedish artist Robyn is a fantastic exploration of love, loss and bittersweet hope. The record excels thanks to its magnetic production that takes elements of fluffy pop, dark techno and euro-disco and combines them with subtlety and an immense knack for low tension. But Robyn herself is the one who commands the tracks with her usual breathy vocals and formless soul, doing that skillfully and amicaly. Honey defies what pop should be, each song revealing vast amounts of euphoria and cacophony (no matter how settled or tranquilised they might seem), and it ultimately sets the standard for another masterpiece of a singer-songwriter who knows how to tackle emotions both joyfully and cleverly.

Tracks I like the most: Becasue It's In The Music, Between The Lines, Missing U, Ever Again
Tracks I like the least: Send To Robin Immediately

Artist: Robyn
Country: Sweden
Album: Honey
Released: 26/10/2018
Genres: Electropop, Dance-Pop, Synth-Pop, Deep House, Nu-Disco
Length: 40:26

Kurt Vile - Bottle It In

Score: 7.2

The latest album from American singer-songwriter Kurt Vile is another good example of his skills at mellow storytelling and chilling approach to psychedelic folk-rock. Most of the tracks recount an intricate anecdote and are conveyed with delicacy and strength, though one is left wishing the artist could have taken more risks sonically as well as lyrically. Anyway, Bottle It In is long but not exhausting, though imaginative but not exhuberant.

Tracks I like the most: Bassackwards, Rollin With The Flow, Hysteria
Tracks I like the least: (bottle back)

Artist: Kurt Vile
Country: United States
Album: Bottle It In
Released: 12/10/2018
Genres: Indie Rock, Indie Folk, Psychedelic Folk, Singer-Songwriter, Americana, Alt-Country
Length: 78:46
