Score: 7.6
The debut full-length album from English electronic producer Ross From Friends marks a shift in his approach to music, blending lo-fi with heavy-sampled and chilling tech-house sounds that are as dance-oriented as ambient-driven. When the record takes off, it delivers some wonderul insights into a playful and somberly difficult mind, as the recordings and rhythms match up with the emotions; when it falters, it feels under-cooked and bland at best. In the end, Family Portrait is meshed and swirled, eloquent and nonsensical; radiant in its flawed unnature.
