Always Ascending, the fifth studio record from the Scottish band that marked a generation, is not a resilient album. Except for a few standouts, it usually falls into pits it rarely stands up from, and overuses the techniques that made the band so appealing in the first place to the extent of repetitive boredom. Franz Ferdinand has been lessening its nerve-wrackingness and power over the course of the years and releases, but hardly ever this perplexingly.
