Matthew Barnes returns after four years from his ground-breaking debut album Engravings to match up expectations and throw a boisteoursly slow-paced album about a scattered, fuzzy, sepia-like past mixed with a tumultuous, shady present and a somehow hopeful future. This time relying more on the abstract, the results are as shimmering and arresting as ever, while the loops, interludes and chopped vocals manifest themselves with even more wit, bravura and (yes) [com]passion. It progresses stealthily, but it eventually explodes.
