Film and TV series music score artist Randy Newman has become a legend in the industry, and here, on his newest record in nine years, he excels at telling sarcastic, melodramatic, clever and socially conscious/existential stories about present times and invented pasts. The real highlights though, appear when he opts to get emotional, vulnerable and personal. The album feels fragmented and somewhat messy in execution, but the mastery and the constant sense of performance hold it all together pretty nicely.
