Cosmo Sheldrake - The Much Much How How And I

Score: 7.4

The debut studio album from multi-instrumentalist Cosmo Sheldrake may appeal to New Weird America or Freak Folk fans because of its lyrical similarities to acts like Joanna Newsom, Fiona Apple, Bonnie "Prince" Billy or even Mount Eerie, and stylistically to the Zaba-era Glass Animals and pinches of Alt-J. However, the artist finds a way to sound completely his own while wearing his influences on his sleeve, reciting troubador-like stories about lives under the sea, attacked castles and forest adventures. All that said, it's utterly difficult to truly find out what the cryptic lyrics try to tell us, but at least they're easily swallowed up thanks to the vivid, organic and extravagantly idiosyncratic musical arrangements. There's potential here, and I'm sure we've just seen the tip of it.
